The Angel on Pierce Street

The Angel on Pierce Street

A true story written about an angel that appeared at our church...

A few years ago as our church was moving into a building that we had bought in a little neighborhood hidden on Pierce Street I noticed a man, wearing a big sun hat come by.  He looked to be in his mid fifties, Hispanic and had obviously had a stroke, for he walked in small, slow, measured steps and used a cane.  I went over to talk to him and discovered his name was Frank.  As I introduced myself Frank began to slowly tell my his sad story of how he had been a successful building contractor, but then lost everything including his wife and young son as a result of the stoke.  Now he was back living at home with his aged parents and he walked around our block every day, which took him four hours...

Title:  Grace for a Change: Ministering Out of the Inheritance We Proclaim

Synopsis:   If you’re tired of trying 7 Principles for Powerful this and 6 Simple Steps to that, maybe it’s time to try grace for a change.  Maybe it’s time to minister out of the very grace you proclaim.  In 1738, when a doubt-filled John Wesley was considering abandoning preaching, Moravian Bishop Peter Boehler exhorted him: “Preach faith til you have faith and, then, because you have it, you will preach faith.”     We might think the same of charis:  “Preach grace til you have it.”  Boehler’s advice seemed to help Wesley, but does ministry really work that way?   Do we really get something for ourselves by telling others about it?  You can tell a thousand people about a great restaurant, but, if you want to be nourished and delighted by its cuisine, you have dine there yourself.  At the  Fall, 2010, MIT, we will celebrate our inheritance of grace, not so we can explain it, teach it or preach it – but so we can live it.

As we are empowered by the very gospel we proclaim, we’ll discover how grace enables us to face disappointments, avoid burnout, develop confident thought patterns, and thrive in our callings in ministry.

In the past, we've had two conferences a year. April Connection & Fall MIT. However, we have decided to have only one major conference this year. The decision was made in order to build regions around the United States. For more information on our regions - check out the regions section of our website!
